Statement on the Paycheck Fairness Act Filibuster
"We can do better."
We received some disappointing news about Congress, once again. This time it was the Senate. They voted against having an open debate or even voting on the Paycheck Fairness Act.
This is just one example of many of how we can do better. And, it is disappointing from all perspectives:
First, if they are not going to debate a bill, they are not doing their job. Plain and simple, debating a bill is major principle of American democracy.
Second, it was disrespectful to working women that there wasn’t any debate. Seventy percent of women work in Tennessee. Think about your own household or your neighbor’s. Mother, wife, daughter, aunt, niece, sister – close to 3 in 4 women work.
Third, they have missed the point completely about this issue and have proven to be stuck in the last century. As a former CFO, I can tell you that this bill is about “the gag rule”. You know this rule well. It’s the one that keeps all pay information confidential. If you happen to share pay information, you can currently be fired.
Fourth, making pay information available to you is just part of what we should be doing in the 21st century, especially since we have the technology to do it. The reality is that we have a ton of information available through the internet – to manage our finances, to stay fit, and even to manage our health. And, it is exactly what President Obama’s executive order does for federal contractors that was signed on Tuesday. The only drawback to that executive order is that it only covers federal contractors which employ about 1 out of every 5 workers in the country. Congress must act to make this effective for all workers.
Fifth, the bill prevents businesses from retaliating against employees who ask for pay information.
Finally, let’s not miss the main point, that women – like everyone else – should get equal pay for equal work.
Let’s face it: these folks are are not doing their jobs, and they are out of touch with the times.
That’s why I’m running. I believe we should have leadership for the 21st century."
